Creditworthiness and down payment

BIK (Polish credit bureau): meaning in a Polish mortgage

In Polish: BIK (Biuro Informacji Kredytowej)
This is the word you will see in bank documents.

Definition

BIK (Biuro Informacji Kredytowej, the Credit Information Bureau) is an institution set up by banks that collects data on loans, cards, limits and instalment purchases: amounts, schedules, repayment history and credit enquiries. Data come from banks, credit unions (SKOK) and some lending companies. Every bank checks BIK before deciding on a mortgage.

What it means for you

Your BIK history can decide the outcome more than your salary: delays over 30 days in recent years are a common reason for refusal. Active cards and limits visible in BIK lower creditworthiness, because the bank counts a charge on the whole limit. Download your own report 3–6 months before applying, so you have time to fix things.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check my BIK record for free?

Create an account at bik.pl and request a free copy of your data, available once every 6 months. It does not include the score, which is in the paid BIK Report.

How long is a delay visible in BIK?

If a delay exceeded 60 days and the bank warned you at least 30 days in advance, the data may be processed without your consent for 5 years after repayment.

Is having no BIK history a problem?

It does not rule out an application, but for the bank it means no information. Some banks then assess only income and job stability, others lower the rating. Foreigners new to Poland often start with no BIK history.
