Assignment of policy rights (cesja): meaning in a Polish mortgage

In Polish: Cesja praw z polisy
This is the word you will see in bank documents.

Definition

Assignment of policy rights (cesja) is the transfer to the bank of the right to compensation or benefit under an insurance policy, most often a property policy. If damage occurs, the money up to the amount of the debt goes to the bank first. The assignment is part of the security for a mortgage.

What it means for you

Without an assignment the bank usually will not pay out the loan, and its absence during repayment may raise the margin under the agreement. Each time you renew or change insurer, you must give the bank a new assignment. After repaying the loan, end it so that any compensation goes to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a policy assignment?

It is the transfer to the bank of the right to compensation under a policy. If the property is destroyed, compensation up to the amount of the debt goes to the bank and the rest to you.

Does the assignment have to be renewed every year?

Yes, if you buy a new policy every year. Each new policy needs a new assignment, with confirmation delivered to the bank before the previous one expires.

What happens to the assignment after the loan is repaid?

It no longer serves a purpose. Give the insurer the bank's certificate of repayment so that compensation goes to you.
