Payment holiday (wakacje kredytowe): meaning in a Polish mortgage

In Polish: Wakacje kredytowe
This is the word you will see in bank documents.

Definition

A payment holiday (wakacje kredytowe) is a suspension of loan instalments for a set time. Statutory payment holidays for złoty loans, with no interest charged for the period, applied in 2022–2024. In 2025 and 2026 there are none, but a bank may offer its own suspension on contractual terms.

What it means for you

If you need a break in repayments today, you cannot use the statute, only your bank's offer or the Borrower Support Fund. A bank suspension depends on the bank's consent, and interest for the period is usually charged and added to the debt. Contact the bank before your first missed instalment, because that is when you have the most options.

Frequently asked questions

Are there payment holidays in Poland in 2026?

No. Statutory payment holidays applied in 2022–2024 and were not extended. A bank may offer its own suspension of repayments on contractual terms.

How are bank payment holidays different from statutory ones?

The bank must agree to its own suspension, and interest for the period is usually charged. Statutory holidays were available by law, with no interest for the suspended period.

What instead of a payment holiday?

An application to the Borrower Support Fund if you are unemployed or the instalment exceeds 40% of income, or restructuring the loan at the bank, e.g. a grace period or a longer term.
