Credit enquiry (BIK): meaning in a Polish mortgage

In Polish: Zapytanie kredytowe
This is the word you will see in bank documents.

Definition

A credit enquiry is a record in BIK, the Polish credit bureau, created when a bank or another lender checks your credit history in connection with an application for a loan, a card or a limit. The enquiry is recorded even if you do not get the loan or withdraw. It does not contain the bank’s decision.

What it means for you

In the BIK scoring model used since 1 July 2026, enquiries are not part of the score. Every bank still sees them in the report and may take them into account in its own assessment: several applications for cash loans just before a mortgage can look like you are short of money. Mortgage applications in 2–3 banks are normal.

Frequently asked questions

Does a credit enquiry lower my BIK score?

In the model used since 1 July 2026, enquiries are not part of the score. Banks still see them in the report and may consider them in their own assessment.

Can a bank see that another bank refused me?

It cannot see the decision. It sees the other bank’s enquiry, and if no loan was granted, there is no new liability next to it.

Is checking my own BIK report an enquiry?

No. When you download your own report at bik.pl, banks do not see it as a credit enquiry.
